A blood glucose meter, also known as a glucometer, is a medical device used to measure the approximate level of glucose in the blood. It may use test strips or glucose-sensitive materials to determine glucose concentration. It is an essential tool for glucose monitoring, especially for individuals with diabetes mellitus or hypoglycemia.
A small blood sample is usually obtained by pricking the fingertip with a lancet and placing it on a disposable test strip. The device then analyzes the sample and displays the blood glucose level in mg/dL or mmol/L. Since the 1980s, maintaining near-normal blood glucose levels has been a primary goal in managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Regular home blood glucose monitoring (HBGM) helps achieve this goal and reduces both long-term complications of hyperglycemia and short-term risks of hypoglycemia.
