Bromfenac ophthalmic solution is indicated for the treatment of postoperative inflammation and for the relief of ocular pain in patients following cataract surgery.
Bromfenac Sodium
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Bromfenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with significant anti-inflammatory effects. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis through blocking cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. Prostaglandins play an important role in mediating intraocular inflammation. Studies in animal models have shown that prostaglandins can disrupt the blood-aqueous barrier, cause vasodilation, increase vascular permeability, promote leukocyte infiltration, and elevate intraocular pressure.
Dosage Administration
For the treatment of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction, one drop of ophthalmic solution should be applied to the affected eye(s) once daily beginning 1 day prior to cataract surgery, continued on the day of surgery, and through the first 14 days of the postoperative period.
Contraindications
Bromfenac ophthalmic solution is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
Side Effects
Commonly reported adverse effects include abnormal sensation in the eye, conjunctival hyperemia, eye irritation (such as burning or stinging), eye pain, itching, redness, headache, and iritis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This medication should be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Precautions & Warnings
Topical NSAIDs may delay or slow the healing process. Topical corticosteroids are also known to have similar effects.
