Indications

Bromhexine is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders associated with productive cough. These include:

  • Tracheobronchitis
  • Bronchitis with emphysema
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Bronchitis accompanied by bronchospasm
  • Chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions
  • Pneumoconiosis
Pharmacology

Bromhexine Hydrochloride is an oral mucolytic agent. It works by breaking down the structure of acidic mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucus, resulting in thinner and less viscous secretions that are easier to expel. It is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed throughout body tissues.

Dosage Administration

The recommended doses for adults and children are stated below:

  • Adult & Children over 12 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoons) 3 times daily
  • Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) 3 times daily
  • Children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) 3 times daily
  • Bromhexine Hydrochloride is not recommended for children under 2 years of age without advice.
Interactions

No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported with bromhexine.

Contraindications

Bromhexine Hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.

Side Effects

Gastrointestinal disturbances may occasionally occur. Temporary increases in serum aminotransferase levels have been reported. Other possible side effects include headache, dizziness (vertigo), and allergic reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use in Pregnancy: Caution is advised during pregnancy. The potential benefits should be weighed against possible risks to the fetus.

Use in Lactation: Bromhexine may pass into breast milk; therefore, its use is not recommended during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

As mucolytic agents may irritate the gastric mucosa, bromhexine should be used cautiously in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease.
Caution is also advised in patients with asthma. In patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, the clearance of bromhexine and its metabolites may be reduced.
