Butenafine is a synthetic antifungal agent related structurally and pharmacologically to allylamine antifungals. Although its exact mechanism of action is not fully established, it is believed to act by altering fungal cell membranes, increasing membrane permeability and inhibiting fungal growth. Butenafine is particularly effective against dermatophytes and shows strong fungicidal activity compared to agents like terbinafine, naftifine, tolnaftate, clotrimazole, and bifonazole.
It is also active against Candida albicans, with activity comparable or superior to terbinafine and naftifine. Additionally, it demonstrates low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against organisms such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus species.
