Butenafine Hydrochloride

Generic Medicine
Indications

Butenafine cream is indicated for the topical treatment of superficial dermatophyte infections, including:

  • Interdigital tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
  • Tinea corporis (ringworm)
  • Tinea cruris (jock itch) caused by organisms such as E. floccosum, T. mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, and T. tonsurans
Pharmacology

Butenafine is a synthetic antifungal agent related structurally and pharmacologically to allylamine antifungals. Although its exact mechanism of action is not fully established, it is believed to act by altering fungal cell membranes, increasing membrane permeability and inhibiting fungal growth. Butenafine is particularly effective against dermatophytes and shows strong fungicidal activity compared to agents like terbinafine, naftifine, tolnaftate, clotrimazole, and bifonazole.

It is also active against Candida albicans, with activity comparable or superior to terbinafine and naftifine. Additionally, it demonstrates low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against organisms such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus species.

Dosage Administration

In the treatment of interdigital tinea pedis, Butenafine should be applied twice daily for 7 days or once daily for 4 weeks. Patients with tinea corporis or tinea cruris should apply Butenafine once daily for two weeks. Sufficient Butenafine cream should be applied to cover affected areas and immediately surrounding skin of patients with interdigital tinea pedis, tinea corporis and tinea cruris.
