Oxazepam

Indications

Oxazepam is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, including anxiety associated with depression. It is particularly effective in elderly patients for relieving anxiety, tension, agitation, and irritability. It is also used in the management of acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Pharmacology

Oxazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs that act on the central nervous system to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural neurotransmitter in the brain, which helps reduce nerve activity and induces relaxation.

Dosage Administration

Adult:

  • Mild to Moderate Anxiety with Tension, Irritability and Agitation: The usual dose is 10 to 15 milligrams 3 or 4 times per day.
  • Severe Anxiety, Depression with Anxiety, or Alcohol Withdrawal: The usual dose is 15 to 30 milligrams, 3 or 4 times per day.

Children:

  • Safety and effectiveness have not been established for children less than 6 years of age.
  • Nor have dosage guidelines been established for children 6 to 12 years. The doctor will adjust the dosage to fit the child's needs.

Older adults: The usual starting dose is 10 milligrams, 3 times a day. The doctor may increase the dose to 15 milligrams 3 or 4 times a day if needed.

Interactions

Oxazepam may increase the effects of alcohol, therefore alcohol should generally be avoided during therapy. When combined with other medicines, the effects of either drug may become increased, decreased, or altered. Care should be taken when using Oxazepam with the following drugs: Antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), Narcotic analgesics (e.g., oxycodone, pethidine), Sedatives (e.g., secobarbital, triazolam), Tranquilizers (e.g., diazepam, alprazolam).

Contraindications

Oxazepam is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Oxazepam or other benzodiazepines such as diazepam. It should not be used in patients with severe psychiatric disorders beyond anxiety conditions.

Side Effects

Side effects cannot be predicted in advance. Any new or worsening symptoms should be reported immediately to a doctor. The physician will decide whether the treatment should continue. Common side effect includes drowsiness. Less common or rare effects include blood disorders, changes in libido, dizziness, excitation, fainting, headache, liver dysfunction, impaired muscle coordination, nausea, skin rash, sluggish response, slurred speech, fluid retention, tremor, vertigo, and yellowing of eyes or skin. Abrupt withdrawal or rapid dose reduction may cause abdominal and muscle cramps, seizures, depressed mood, insomnia, sweating, tremors, and vomiting.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Oxazepam is not recommended during pregnancy due to possible fetal risk. It may pass into breast milk and may cause adverse effects in the nursing infant. Therefore, breastfeeding is not advised during treatment.

Precautions & Warnings

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Patients should avoid driving or operating machinery while taking it. Alcohol intake should be avoided or strictly limited. Elderly patients should use it with caution as they are more sensitive to sedative effects.

Store in a cool, dry place protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
