This medicine is indicated for the prevention and local treatment of superficial eye infections caused by oxytetracycline- and polymyxin-sensitive organisms. These include infections caused by streptococci, rickettsiae, E. coli, and A. aerogenes, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, pink eye, corneal ulcer, and blepharitis in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses. It is also used for ocular infections resulting from secondary bacterial complications of distemper in dogs, as well as bacterial inflammatory conditions that may occur secondary to other infectious diseases in these animal species.
Oxytetracycline + Polymixin B Sulphate
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Oxytetracycline works by inhibiting bacterial cell growth through the inhibition of protein synthesis. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents amino-acyl tRNA from attaching to the A site of the ribosome. This binding is reversible in nature. Being lipophilic, oxytetracycline can easily cross the bacterial cell membrane or pass through porin channels.
The broad-spectrum effectiveness of this ointment against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms is enhanced by polymyxin B, which is especially effective against gram-negative bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Polymyxin B is often considered the antibiotic of choice for such infections. In addition, polymyxin B sulfate may also possess some antifungal activity.
Dosage Administration
Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Ointment should be administered topically to the eye 2-4 times daily.

If pregnancy occurs while using oxytetracycline or polymyxin B sulfate ointment, consult your doctor immediately. The benefits and possible risks of using this medicine during pregnancy should be carefully considered. It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk. Precautions & Warnings
Serious and life-threatening hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in some cats after using antibiotic ophthalmic preparations. If a cat develops facial swelling, itching, weakness, vomiting, or difficulty breathing within 4 hours of application, treatment should be stopped immediately and a veterinarian should be contacted. The use of oxytetracycline and other antibiotics may also cause overgrowth of resistant organisms such as Monilia, staphylococci, and other bacteria. If new infections caused by non-sensitive bacteria or fungi appear during treatment, appropriate medical measures should be taken.
