Calcium Gluconate is used in the treatment of calcium deficiency states and as a dietary supplement when calcium intake is insufficient. It is indicated in:

• Severe hypocalcemic tetany
• Hypoparathyroidism
• Vitamin D deficiency
• Osteoporosis
• Severe hyperkalemia

Calcium Gluconate helps prevent and treat calcium deficiency by restoring normal calcium balance. It supports proper nerve transmission, muscle function, and maintains normal cardiac activity.

1-2 ampoules Ca+ Gluconate IM. Daily or every alternate day. Children require 1/2 of adult dose IM injection should be given deep to gluteus medius muscle Using a long needle. This route is not recommended for children.

• Acute hypocalcemia: 10-20 ml (2.32-4.64 m.mol)/Kg.
• Body weight Fluoride or lead poisoning: 0.3 ml/Kg Body weights.
• Neonatal tetany: 0.3 (0.7 m.mo)/Kg body weight.

Concurrent use of high doses of calcium with thiazide diuretics may lead to milk-alkali syndrome and hypercalcemia. It may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. Calcium may reduce the effectiveness of calcium channel blockers. Absorption of calcium may be enhanced when used with calcitriol (an active form of vitamin D).

This medication is contraindicated in:

• Patients receiving cardiac glycosides
• Patients with renal failure
• Patients with severe hypercalciuria
• Patients with hypercalcemia

Rapid administration of Calcium Gluconate injection may cause nausea, vomiting, flushing, sweating, hypotension, and circulatory collapse, which may be life-threatening.

Pregnancy Category C. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, and there are no adequate controlled studies in humans. This medication should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk to the fetus.

Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function, cardiovascular disease, hypercalcemia-related conditions (such as sarcoidosis), other malignancies, and during pregnancy.
