Calcium Lactate

Generic Medicine
Indications

Calcium Lactate is primarily used in the treatment of calcium deficiency, which commonly occurs in growing children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. It is particularly effective in relieving symptoms of hypocalcemia such as paresthesia, carpopedal spasm, muscle cramps, increased neuromuscular excitability leading to tetany, convulsions, mental disturbances, dermatitis, and ECG abnormalities.

Pharmacology

This preparation has multiple actions. It provides supplemental dietary calcium, helps neutralize gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease, and binds phosphorus in the intestine to reduce overall phosphate levels, particularly in chronic renal conditions. Calcium Lactate contributes to lowering serum phosphate levels, which supports proper deposition of calcium phosphate in bones and soft tissues.

Dosage Administration

Adults including elderly: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
Children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
Pregnant women: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily. Duration: During third trimester and lactation.

Interactions

Calcium Lactate may decrease the effectiveness of calcium channel blockers. Intravenous administration of calcium salts along with cardiac glycosides may result in serious adverse effects. The risk of hypercalcemia increases when used concurrently with thiazide diuretics. It may also reduce the absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis and bone metastases of malignant conditions.

Side Effects

Oral administration of Calcium Lactate may occasionally cause gastrointestinal irritation and constipation, although such effects are uncommon.

Precautions & Warnings

This medication should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function, cardiovascular disease, or sarcoidosis.
