Calcium Orotate

Generic Medicine
Indications

Calcium Orotate tablets are used to prevent and treat low blood calcium levels in individuals with inadequate dietary intake. It is also beneficial in conditions requiring increased calcium supplementation such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis, juvenile osteoporosis, and drug-induced osteoporosis (e.g., due to phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone). It may also be used during pregnancy and lactation, in premenstrual syndrome (PMS), hypoparathyroidism, and after hip joint replacement surgery.

Additionally, Calcium Orotate may help in certain inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, spondylitis, and various cardiovascular disorders. It has also been associated with benefits in neurological and inflammatory conditions including encephalitis, retinitis, phlebitis, colitis, and multiple sclerosis. Calcium Orotate may aid in weight management by reducing excessive appetite, help stabilize mood fluctuations, and support cognitive function. It may also contribute to improved cardiac muscle performance. Some studies suggest it may help reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Pharmacology

Calcium Orotate is a calcium supplement combined with orotic acid, which acts as a carrier molecule facilitating the transport of calcium across cell membranes. This enhances intracellular uptake of calcium, especially in bone tissues. It also supports the maintenance of healthy cartilage and plays a role in the synthesis of nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA. Due to its ability to penetrate cell membranes effectively, Calcium Orotate ensures better utilization and metabolism of calcium within the body.

Dosage Administration

Calcium Orotate 400 mg: As an addition to the daily diet, 2-3 tablets are usually recommended with meal or as directed by a physician.

Calcium Orotate 740 mg: As an addition to the daily diet, 1-2 tablets are usually recommended with meal or as directed by a physician.

Interactions

Calcium may reduce the absorption of several medications when taken together, including bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate), quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, minocycline), levothyroxine, and anticonvulsants such as phenytoin. It may also interact with tiludronate disodium. Thiazide diuretics may increase the risk of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria when used with calcium supplements. Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium can increase urinary calcium excretion. Mineral oil and stimulant laxatives may decrease calcium absorption. Glucocorticoids such as prednisone can lead to calcium depletion and increase the risk of osteoporosis with long-term use. Oral contraceptives and estrogen-containing preparations may also reduce calcium levels. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as corticosteroids, may further contribute to calcium depletion.

Contraindications

Calcium Orotate is contraindicated in patients with conditions such as constipation or reduced bowel movement, kidney stones, kidney disease, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, hypercalcemia, and severe dehydration.

Side Effects

Common side effects include abdominal bloating and swelling. Other possible effects include loss of appetite, stomach upset, constipation, nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, increased thirst and urination, weakness, fatigue, and, in rare cases, kidney stone formation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant and breastfeeding women have increased calcium requirements. Calcium Orotate supplementation may help reduce the risk of pregnancy-related hypertension and support maternal and fetal health.

Caution should be exercised in patients with known hypersensitivity to Calcium Orotate. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions. Special caution is required in patients with kidney disease, kidney stones, achlorhydria, heart disease, pancreatic disorders, sarcoidosis, and malabsorption syndromes.
