Carbonyl Iron + Folic Acid
Generic MedicinePharmacology
This is a combination preparation of carbonyl iron and folic acid. It contains carbonyl iron with a high iron content (not less than 98%). Due to its high bioavailability and low toxicity, carbonyl iron is considered a safe and effective option for iron supplementation.
Dosage Administration
Adult: One capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician.
Interactions
Carbonyl iron may reduce the absorption of certain medications such as tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine. Folic acid may interact with antiepileptic drugs, potentially lowering the plasma levels of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. Iron therapy should also be avoided in patients with hemolytic anemia.
Side Effects
Allergic reactions have been reported with oral folic acid. Oral iron preparations may cause constipation, especially in elderly patients, and in some cases may lead to fecal impaction.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The use of any medication during the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided unless clearly necessary. Iron therapy in early pregnancy should only be given when iron deficiency is confirmed. Preventive supplementation of iron and folic acid may be considered during the later stages of pregnancy, particularly in cases of inadequate dietary intake.
Precautions & Warnings
Iron may form complexes with antacids and tetracycline, which can reduce the absorption of both when taken together.
Therapeutic Class
Iron & Vitamin Combined preparations
Storage Conditions
Do not store above 30°C. Keep protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
