Pyrantel Pamoate

Generic Medicine
Indications

Pyrantel Pamoate is specifically indicated for the treatment of infestations caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale/Necator americanus, and Trichostrongylus. It may be used in both adults and children for single or mixed parasitic infections involving these organisms.

Pharmacology

Pyrantel Pamoate acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing sustained contraction followed by paralysis of helminths. This results in loss of attachment of worms from the intestinal wall, allowing them to be expelled naturally through the gastrointestinal tract. Since pyrantel is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, systemic exposure in the host is minimal, resulting in low toxicity. In cases of heavy worm burden, spastic paralysis of worms may lead to transient intestinal obstruction due to mass expulsion. Worms are usually passed in normal stool, sometimes with diarrhea, abdominal straining, or occasional vomiting.

Dosage Administration

Pyrantel Pamoate is given orally at anytime without regard to ingestion of food or beverages. A single dose of 11 mg/kg body weight, to a maximum of 1 g, should be given to treat infestations caused by the parasites mentioned above. In the case of Pinworm, it is often wise to repeat the dose after an interval of 2 weeks.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Pyrantel Pamoate or any component of the formulation.
