Scar treatment creams generally work by reducing tension on the scar through:
- moisturizing and softening the outer layer of the skin
- forming a protective barrier that helps retain moisture
- supporting cellular regeneration and remodeling of connective tissue beneath the scar
Some formulations may also help protect the sensitive scar area from photodamage. The effectiveness depends on the active ingredients present in the topical preparation.
