Choline salicylate possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Similar to salicylic acid, it does not exhibit antithrombotic activity. Its effects are mainly due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Cetalkonium chloride acts as an antiseptic agent with bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Absorption: Choline salicylate is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Distribution: It is distributed throughout extracellular fluids and most body tissues.
Plasma Half-life: 2–4 hours
Excretion: Primarily via urine
Protein Binding: 80–90%
Dosage Administration
Adult: Wash hands, apply ½ inch of gel on to the sore area. This can be repeated after every 3 hours.
Interactions
Salicylates may enhance the effect of anticoagulants and reduce the effectiveness of uricosuric agents.
Contraindications
Not to be used in:
- Patients with hypersensitivity to salicylates (e.g., aspirin)
- Patients with active peptic ulcer disease
Side Effects
Salicylates may cause bronchospasm and may trigger asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clinical data suggest that salicylates are generally safe in pregnancy. Small amounts may pass into breast milk, but adverse effects in nursing infants are unlikely.
