Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is one of the oldest cultivated herbal plants, naturally rich in isoflavones (plant-derived phytoestrogens). It is used as a dietary supplement to support women’s health and well-being during and after menopause. Red clover isoflavones are naturally extracted plant estrogens and are not synthetically produced. Compared to soy, red clover contains a higher diversity and concentration of isoflavones. It is approved by international regulatory authorities and has been supported by more than 15 years of scientific research as a menopause-support supplement.
Red clover extract acts as an estrogen receptor modulator by binding to intracellular estradiol receptors. It has also been described as having anti-progestin activity due to inhibition of progesterone-induced alkaline phosphatase, a marker of progestin activity. It may increase uterine weight and reduce cervical mucus viscosity. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) contains isoflavones, which are natural plant estrogens that mimic estrogen activity in the body. These compounds are commonly used by women to support hormonal balance, health, and vitality during menopause.
The main isoflavones include genistein, daidzein, biochanin A, and formononetin. These compounds help regulate hormonal balance by acting as weak estrogen mimics, supporting menopausal health. Unlike conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), red clover isoflavones preferentially bind to estrogen receptor beta and show little or no affinity for estrogen receptor alpha.
1 or 2 capsules 1 to 3 times daily or as advised by the registered physician.
Should not be used in patients with estrogen receptor–positive neoplasia.
Common side effects may include headache, nausea, and skin rash. Due to the presence of coumarin derivatives, Trifolium pratense should be used with caution in patients with coagulation disorders or those receiving anticoagulant therapy.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
