Chlorhexidine Gluconate + Isopropyl alcohol

Generic Medicine
Indications

This combination hand rub is indicated for:

  • A rapid-acting, broad-spectrum antimicrobial preparation used to disinfect clean hands of doctors, nurses, and healthcare personnel before surgical procedures or after handling contaminated materials
  • Disinfection of surgical instruments
  • Disinfection of skin prior to surgery or other invasive procedures

Composition

This preparation contains:

  • 0.5% w/v Chlorhexidine Gluconate (equivalent to 2.5% v/v Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution BP)
  • 70% v/v Isopropyl Alcohol BP
Pharmacology

At physiological pH, chlorhexidine salts dissociate to release positively charged chlorhexidine cations. These cations bind to negatively charged bacterial cell walls, producing a bactericidal effect. At lower concentrations, chlorhexidine exhibits a bacteriostatic effect, while at higher concentrations it disrupts the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell death.
