Ciclopirox Cream is indicated for the topical treatment of various skin fungal infections, including tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis caused by organisms such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis. It is also effective in candidiasis caused by Candida albicans and in tinea (pityriasis) versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur. Additionally, ciclopirox shows activity against certain gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, ciclopirox olamine alone is often sufficient for treating mild to moderate inflammatory fungal infections.
Ciclopirox Olamine (Cream)
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Ciclopirox Olamine is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur. It demonstrates fungicidal activity against organisms such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, and Candida albicans. The mechanism of action is not completely defined but is believed to involve disruption of fungal cell metabolism by interfering with the uptake of essential substrates and ions. This leads to inhibition of fungal growth and cell death. In addition to its antifungal effects, ciclopirox also exhibits antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It has anti-inflammatory properties demonstrated by inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, as well as blocking enzymes such as 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase.
Dosage Administration
Ciclopirox Cream should be gently massaged onto the affected and surrounding skin areas twice daily for four weeks. Clinical improvement with relief of pruritus and other symptoms usually occurs within the first week of treatment. If a patient shows no clinical improvement after four weeks of treatment with Ciclopirox cream, the diagnosis should be redetermined. Patients with Tinea versicolor usually exhibit clinical and mycological clearing after two weeks of treatment.
