Salicylic Acid + Lactic Acid

Generic Medicine
Indications

This topical solution is indicated for the treatment of warts, corns, and calluses.

Information for Patients

Warts: A wart is a viral infection affecting the superficial layers of the skin. The incubation period may range from a few weeks to several months. Warts can spread through direct contact, especially when the virus comes in contact with damaged skin.

Corns: A corn is a small, hardened area of skin that often appears yellow compared to surrounding skin. It is usually round or cone-shaped and may point inward into the skin. Corns commonly develop on the feet and sometimes on the hands due to repeated friction or pressure.

Calluses: A callus is a thick, rough area of skin that covers a broader surface. Like corns, it develops due to repeated friction or pressure, but unlike corns, calluses are flat and maintain normal skin markings.

Pharmacology

Salicylic acid is a widely used keratolytic agent that causes desquamation and destruction of epithelial tissue by dissolving the intercellular cement of the stratum corneum. Lactic acid influences the keratinisation process, reducing hyperkeratosis, and also acts as a caustic agent leading to the breakdown of hyperkeratotic tissue. Collodion is derived from cellulose in a solution of ethanol and ether. It facilitates easy and precise application of the product and forms a film upon drying, which hydrates the tissue and enhances penetration of the active ingredients.

Dosage Administration

Unscrew bottle cap and with the help of brush applicator, apply to the affected areas. ‘Before starting to use this topical solution, unscrew the fitted cap, discard it. • Continue treatment once daily until the lesion is completely cleared and the ridge lines of the skin have been restored or when the corn can be removed.
  • The usual treatment period is 6 to 12 weeks.
Interactions

This topical solution may enhance the absorption of other medicines applied to the same area. Therefore, concurrent use with other topical preparations on the treated site should be avoided. Since systemic absorption of this product is minimal, interactions with systemically administered drugs are unlikely.

This solution is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any active ingredient or excipients. It should not be used on open wounds, irritated or inflamed skin, or infected areas. It must not be applied on the face, anogenital region, moles, birthmarks, mucous membranes, or warts with hair, abnormal coloration, or raised edges. Avoid application on healthy skin. If skin irritation occurs, treatment should be discontinued. Caution is required when treating large areas (>5 cm²) due to risk of salicylate toxicity. It is not recommended for patients with diabetes, poor circulation, or peripheral neuropathy unless under medical supervision. Use is not advised in children or adolescents during or immediately after viral infections such as chickenpox or influenza due to the theoretical risk of Reye’s syndrome. Salicylates may be excreted in breast milk. Avoid inhalation of vapour. Keep out of reach of children.

The safety of this product during pregnancy has not been established. Animal studies with oral salicylic acid have shown embryo toxicity at high doses. Therefore, its use is not recommended during pregnancy. Salicylates may pass into breast milk; hence use during lactation is not advised. If used, contact with the breast area should be avoided to prevent accidental ingestion by the infant.
