Pharmacology

This combination contains two active ingredients: cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate, belonging to different pharmacological classes. Cinnarizine is a calcium channel antagonist, while dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine. Both components act synergistically to reduce symptoms of vertigo (spinning sensation) and nausea. The combination has been found to be more effective than either agent used alone.

Dosage Administration

Adults: 1 tablet three times daily, to be taken after meals. Children and adolescents under the age of 18 years: Not recommended
Elderly: Dosage as for adults.

Interactions

Concurrent use of alcohol, CNS depressants, or tricyclic antidepressants may enhance the sedative effects of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate. Therefore, such combinations should be avoided.

Contraindications

This combination should not be used in patients with severe hepatic impairment or in those with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. It is also contraindicated in patients with angle-closure glaucoma, convulsive disorders, suspected increased intracranial pressure, alcohol abuse, or urinary retention due to urethroprostatic disorders.

Side Effects

Common adverse effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and abdominal discomfort. Rare side effects may include visual disturbances, allergic reactions, photosensitivity, and difficulty in urination. Other possible reactions include weight gain, constipation, chest tightness, jaundice, worsening of angle-closure glaucoma, involuntary movements, agitation, restlessness, and severe skin reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This combination should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Although it does not significantly lower blood pressure, caution is advised in hypotensive patients. The medication should be taken after meals to reduce gastric irritation. It should also be used cautiously in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Overdose Effects

Overdose may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and ataxia along with anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, facial flushing, dilated pupils, tachycardia, fever, headache, and urinary retention. Supportive treatment is recommended, and gastric lavage with isotonic sodium chloride solution may be considered.
