Sertaconazole Nitrate [Vaginal]
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Sertaconazole is a new topical broad-spectrum antifungal agent. It is active against pathogenic yeasts such as Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida spp., Pityrosporum orbiculare; dermatophytes including Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum; and gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
Dosage Administration
One vaginal suppository in the evening, to be inserted deeply into the vagina, preferably while lying down. If symptoms persist, repeat with a second vaginal suppository 7 days after the first administration.
Interactions
Concomitant use with a contraceptive diaphragm may cause damage or rupture of the diaphragm during insertion of the vaginal suppository (see Contraindications). Concurrent use with local spermicidal contraceptives is not recommended, as the spermicidal effect may be inactivated.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to any imidazole antifungal agent or to any of the excipients. Concomitant use with contraceptive diaphragm is contraindicated.
Side Effects
Due to minimal systemic absorption after vaginal use, side effects are unlikely. However, rare cases of allergic reactions or local irritation such as burning sensation or increased itching may occur, which usually resolve after discontinuation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
No embryotoxic or teratogenic effects have been observed in animal studies. No adequate studies have been conducted in humans regarding pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- After confirming the diagnosis, the underlying causes of the infection should be identified, and patients should be properly counseled to prevent recurrence in the future.
- Use soaps with neutral or alkaline pH for washing the external genital area, as an acidic environment may promote candidiasis.
- Maintain proper personal hygiene, preferably wear cotton underwear, and avoid vaginal douching.
- If fungal infection develops in the vulvar or perianal region, apply an antifungal cream to the affected areas.
- When appropriate, consider treating the sexual partner in each individual case.
- Do not discontinue treatment during menstruation.
- If a bacterial infection is present along with candidiasis, concurrent treatment is recommended.
- Stop treatment if local irritation or allergic reactions occur.
