Sodium Alginate + Potassium Bicarbonate

Generic Medicine
Indications

This preparation is indicated for the treatment of symptoms caused by the reflux of acid, bile, and pepsin into the esophagus, such as acid regurgitation, heartburn, and indigestion—for example after gastric surgery, due to hiatus hernia, during pregnancy, and in association with reflux esophagitis. It is also used for symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux, including hoarseness, voice disorders, sore throat, and cough. Additionally, this preparation may be used to relieve gastroesophageal reflux symptoms during treatment with acid-suppressing therapy or after its withdrawal.

Pharmacology

This preparation is a combination of Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate. Sodium Alginate is a naturally occurring substance that reacts with stomach acid to form a gel-like layer. Potassium Bicarbonate reacts with gastric acid to produce carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles become trapped within the alginate gel, causing it to float on top of the stomach contents as a protective “raft.” This raft acts as a physical barrier that prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, thereby relieving reflux symptoms such as heartburn. Its action is purely physical and does not depend on systemic absorption. The raft remains effective for up to 4 hours and is then broken down in the digestive system and eliminated in the feces.
