Clotrimazole ear drops are used for the treatment of fungal infections affecting the ear.
Clotrimazole (Ear drop)
Generic MedicineDescription
Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication effective against a wide range of pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur. It primarily acts on actively growing fungi by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, which leads to altered cell membrane permeability and ultimately restricts fungal growth. Additionally, it exhibits some antibacterial properties.
Pharmacology
Clotrimazole acts by disrupting the fungal cell membrane. It inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in increased membrane permeability and leakage of vital intracellular components, thereby killing fungi and yeasts.
Dosage Administration
Instill 2–3 drops of Clotrimazole Ear Drops in the affected ear two or three times daily. The treatment should be continued for at least two weeks after the disappearance of all signs of infection to prevent re-infection.
Interactions
There have been reports of a warming or heat-like sensation when this medicine is used together with Sofradex ear drops.
Contraindications
This medicine should not be used in individuals who are hypersensitive to any of its components.
Side Effects
Clotrimazole is generally well tolerated when applied locally. However, a few side effects may occur occasionally, including redness (erythema), stinging, swelling (edema), itching (pruritus), and general irritation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clotrimazole should be used during pregnancy only after consulting a doctor. Since systemic absorption after topical application is minimal, it is unlikely to pose a risk to the infant during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
If signs of local intolerance appear, the medication should be discontinued and appropriate treatment should be started. Clotrimazole ear drops are not intended for use in the eyes.
Overdose Effects
If accidentally swallowed, appropriate supportive treatment should be provided.
Therapeutic Class
Aural Anti-fungal preparations
