Clotrimazole eliminates fungi and yeasts by disrupting their cell membranes. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and leakage of vital intracellular substances, ultimately causing fungal cell death.
Dosage Administration
Eye ointment: It should be applied thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac every 4 hours daily or as advised by a physician.
Contraindications
Clotrimazole ointment should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
In rare cases, patients may feel a burning sensation or irritation immediately after applying the ointment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women during the first trimester. Clotrimazole should be used during early pregnancy only if clearly necessary.
It is not known whether clotrimazole passes into breast milk; therefore, caution is advised when it is used by breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
If irritation or sensitivity occurs during the use of Clotrimazole ointment, the treatment should be discontinued.
