Urea (25%)
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Topical urea exhibits multiple actions including bacteriostatic, bactericidal, fungistatic, proteolytic, hygroscopic, and mild local anesthetic effects. These effects are dose dependent. Its main therapeutic benefit comes from its hygroscopic property, which induces structural changes in stratum corneum proteins. Urea helps dissolve the intercellular matrix, loosens the horny layer of the skin, and promotes regular shedding of scaly skin, thereby softening hyperkeratotic areas. Its therapeutic effect depends on local concentration rather than systemic absorption. If absorbed, urea is excreted unchanged in urine.
