Pharmacology
Zinc plays an essential role in numerous biological functions including immune enhancement, wound healing, digestion, reproduction, physical growth, and mental development. Zinc supports proper growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. It also possesses antioxidant properties. Zinc may be used in the management of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children. In adults, zinc deficiency may lead to loss of appetite, impaired sense of taste and smell, depression, white spots on fingernails, recurrent infections, infertility, prostate disorders, mental disturbances, delayed wound healing, weakened immune response, diarrhea, mental lethargy, rough skin, and weight loss.
B-vitamins are necessary for releasing energy from food. They play a significant role in maintaining healthy brain and nerve function, as well as supporting normal blood cell formation in both children and adults. They are particularly important for healthy growth and development in children. Deficiency of B-vitamins in adults may result in severe fatigue and various neurological symptoms including weakness, poor balance, confusion, irritability, memory impairment, nervousness, tingling sensations in the limbs, and loss of coordination. Additional symptoms of vitamin B deficiency may include sleep disturbances, nausea, reduced appetite, recurrent infections, and skin lesions.

Likewise, simultaneous use of zinc with fluoroquinolones may decrease the gastrointestinal absorption and serum levels of certain fluoroquinolones. Co-administration of niacin and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (such as lovastatin) may increase the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Pyridoxine may reduce the effectiveness of levodopa by enhancing its peripheral metabolism. Concurrent use of pyridoxine with phenytoin may lower serum phenytoin levels.
