Flaxseed oil [Linum Usitatissimum]

Generic Medicine
Indications

Flaxseed Oil (Linum Usitatissimum) is indicated in hyperlipidemia and constipation.

Pharmacology

Flaxseed is the seed from the plant Linum usitatissimum. Oil from the seed is used to make medicine. People try flaxseed oil for many different conditions, especially high cholesterol, heart disease, and constipation. Flaxseed oil is also applied to the skin to soothe irritations or soften roughness and is used as a dietary supplement.

Flaxseed Oil contains Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. By increasing HDL levels, Flaxseed Oil helps to reduce hyperlipidemia. So if we use Flaxseed oil with other lipid-lowering agents, it will be very helpful for patients with hyperlipidemia. Moreover, ALA helps to reduce inflammation.

Flaxseed Oil reduces cholesterol levels by increasing prostaglandins E1 & E3 (PGE1 & PGE3), which inhibit cholesterol synthesis and stimulate cholesterol movement across cell membranes. It also reduces platelet aggregation by increasing levels of PGE1 and PGE3. Flaxseed oil stimulates the bowels, binds to water, and the mucilage swells, increasing stool volume. It facilitates the passage of feces through the bowel by lubrication through the oil.
