Areca Catechu
Generic MedicinePharmacology
This is a safe and effective indigenous drug prepared from scientifically derived extract of Areca catechu.
A clinical study was conducted on 100 patients with cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) having various neurological disabilities. Fifty patients (intervention group) were treated with Areca catechu, while the remaining fifty patients (control group) received conventional vasodilators. The male-to-female ratio was 4:1. Physiotherapy was given to both groups.
The results showed that unconscious patients regained consciousness earlier in the Areca catechu group. Dysphasic patients also started speaking earlier compared to the control group. Improvement in activities of daily living and recovery of urinary control were also faster. Areca catechu was found beneficial in chronic CVD due to atherosclerosis. The probable mechanism of action of Areca catechu in CVD may include improvement of cerebral circulation, direct stimulation of brain cells, enhancement of brain metabolism and nutrition, or a combination of these effects. Arecoline and other alkaloids present in Areca catechu, known as parasympathomimetic agents, may improve cerebral blood flow by dilating cerebral vessels. Areca catechu also contains essential amino acids and other nutrients or unidentified factors that may enhance brain metabolism. The effects may also be due to direct stimulation of brain activity by its alkaloid constituents.
