Abnormal uterine bleeding is a common condition during the reproductive phase of women and accounts for approximately 20% of patients visiting a general gynecologist. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, describes several herbs useful in abnormal uterine bleeding. Aushokarist (containing Saraca indica, Mangifera indica, and Adhatoda vasica) is scientifically proven and effective in the management of various uterine disorders.

Saraca indica is one of the most widely used remedies for menstrual disorders and female hormonal imbalance. Its principal constituents include steroidal compounds and calcium salts. The bark contains an estrogenic compound called ergosterol, along with alkene esters, tannin, catechin, catechol, and epicatechin.
It has a stimulatory effect on ovarian tissue, producing an estrogen-like activity that enhances ovulation and endometrial repair. It acts as a potent haemostyptic agent and stimulates uterine muscle fibers. It nourishes blood and female reproductive organs and supports healthy hormonal balance. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle by acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Saraca indica is also a proven PGH2 synthetase inhibitor, effectively controlling bleeding. It is recommended for uterine pain relief and also has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Mangifera indica is astringent, antiemetic, and useful in haematocoagulatory disorders, uterine inflammation, and related diseases. It acts as a vitalizer of the female genitourinary tract, tones the uterus, relieves menstrual pain, and helps control uterine activity. It also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.
Cyperus rotundus is effective in treating anemia and general weakness. Adhatoda vasica has antihemorrhagic properties and is beneficial in dysfunctional uterine bleeding and other uterine disorders.
The combined action of these herbs supports ovulation, conception, and proper implantation, ultimately contributing to normal pregnancy. The synergistic effect of all ingredients is responsible for the overall therapeutic activity.
