Generic MedicinePharmacology
Chaste berry (Vitex agnus-castus) is native to Western Asia and Southwestern Europe. It is widely used in gynecological conditions due to its dopaminergic activity at the central level. It has been traditionally used in Europe for premenstrual syndrome, menstrual irregularities, cyclical breast pain, and dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
Its major active compounds include iridoid glycosides such as agnuside and aucubin, along with flavonoids like casticin. It acts as a hormonal modulator by influencing progesterone levels and reducing prolactin secretion through pituitary dopamine receptor activity. It also affects FSH and LH regulation, contributing to hormonal balance.
