Indications

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Urticaria
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Angioneurotic edema
  • Vasomotor rhinitis
  • Cough
  • Common cold
  • Motion sickness
  • Other allergic conditions
Pharmacology

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an alkylamine antihistamine and a potent H1-receptor blocker. It is used to relieve allergy symptoms and generally causes less sedation compared to promethazine. Its effects are achieved by competitively blocking H1 histamine receptors.

Dosage Administration

Adult- Usual adult dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg daily.

Child6-

  • 12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 12 mg daily.
  • 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 6 mg daily.
  • 1-2 years: 1 mg twice daily.

Below 1 year the use of Chlorpheniramine Maleate is not recommended.

Interactions

Chlorpheniramine Maleate has been reported to be incompatible with calcium chloride, kanamycin sulfate, noradrenaline acid tartrate, pentobarbital sodium, and meglumine iodoformate.

Contraindications

Chlorpheniramine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug and in newborn or premature infants.

Side Effects

Chlorpheniramine is generally well tolerated; however, it may occasionally cause drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This drug should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, and is not recommended for use by breastfeeding mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Chlorpheniramine should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy. Care should also be taken when driving or operating machinery during treatment.

Overdose Effects

Adverse effects may include central nervous system (CNS) depression—such as sedation, apnea, or cardiovascular collapse—or CNS stimulation, including insomnia, hallucinations, tremors, and convulsions. Other possible effects are tinnitus, blurred vision, dizziness, ataxia, and hypotension. In children, stimulation and anticholinergic (atropine-like) symptoms—such as dry mouth, dilated pupils, flushing, hyperthermia, and gastrointestinal disturbances—are more likely to occur.
