Abametapir

Indications

Abametapir is a topical pediculicide used for the treatment of head lice infestation in patients aged 6 months and older.It should be used as part of a comprehensive lice management approach, which includes:

  • Washing or dry-cleaning recently worn clothes, hats, bedding, and towels in hot water
  • Cleaning personal items such as combs, brushes, and hair accessories with hot water
  • Using a fine-tooth or special nit comb to remove dead lice and eggs (nits)
Pharmacology

Abametapir is a metalloproteinase inhibitor. These enzymes are essential for the development and survival of lice eggs. By inhibiting metalloproteinases, abametapir disrupts the life cycle of lice, preventing egg development and ultimately eliminating the infestation.

Dosage Administration
  • For topical use only. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Apply LYBY to dry hair in an amount sufficient (up to the full content of one bottle) to thoroughly coat the hair and scalp. Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Massage LYBY into the scalp and throughout the hair; leave on the hair and scalp for 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.
  • Treatment with LYBY involves a single application. Discard any unused product. Do not flush contents down sink or toilet.
Interactions

For 2 weeks after Abametapir application, avoid taking drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4, CYP2B6 or CYP1A2. Otherwise, avoid use of Abametapir.

Side Effects

 The most common side effects of Abametapir include: redness of the skin or scalp, rash, burning sensation of the skin, skin irritation, vomiting, eye irritation, itchy scalp, and changes in hair color.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Not established.
Use in Children and Adolescents: Below 6 months, safety of Abametapir has not been established.

Precautions & Warnings

Risk of Neonatal Benzyl Alcohol Toxicity: Systemic exposure to benzyl alcohol has been associated with serious adverse reactions and death in neonates and low birth-weight infants. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 6 months have not been established.

Use is not recommended in pediatric patients under 6 months of age because of the potential for increased systemic absorption.

Risk of Benzyl Alcohol Toxicity from Accidental Ingestion: Administer only under direct supervision of an adult.

Overdose Effects

If accidentally swallowed, immediate medical attention is required. Patients should contact a healthcare provider or poison control center without delay.

Storage Conditions

Store at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C in a frost-free place. Protect from light and keep out of reach of children.
