Diloxanide furoate is a luminal amebicide that acts directly on the trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica in the intestinal lumen . It is converted in the gut to its active metabolite, diloxanide, which kills the amebae. It is not effective against amebae in the tissues (e.g., liver) .

Diloxanide furoate is indicated for:

• Asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis (carrier state)
• Symptomatic intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery) – often in combination with a tissue amebicide
• Post-treatment of invasive amebiasis (e.g., amebic liver abscess) to eliminate cysts in the intestine.

For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg three times daily for 10 days . For children, the dose is 20 mg/kg/day in three divided doses for 10 days (maximum 1.5 g/day) .

Diloxanide furoate is taken orally with or without food . It should be taken as directed, usually three times daily for 10 days. Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve .

Store at room temperature, below 30°C . Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children .
