Diloxanide is a luminal amoebicide. It is hydrolyzed in the gut, releasing free diloxanide, which acts as an amoebicide. It is used alone in asymptomatic cyst passers (carriers of Entamoeba histolytica cysts). For patients with active amoebic infections, it can be administered together with a 5-nitroimidazole (e.g., metronidazole or tinidazole).
Dosage Administration
Adult: The recommended dose is 500 mg 3 times/day for 10 days. May repeat the course if needed.
Child: >25 kg: 20 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses for 10 days, repeated if necessary.
Interactions
There are no known drug interactions , and none are well-documented.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to diloxanide or any of its components.
