Pharmacology

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals on earth and is present in many foods. Magnesium Oxide is a mineral supplement used to treat or prevent low magnesium levels in the blood. It is essential for human health and participates in over 600 cellular reactions throughout the body. Every cell and organ require magnesium to function properly. It contributes to bone health as well as proper brain, heart, and muscle function.

Magnesium prevents or controls convulsions by blocking neuromuscular transmission and reducing the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. It has a depressant effect on the central nervous system but does not adversely affect the mother, fetus, or newborn when used as directed for eclampsia or pre-eclampsia.

Approximately 24–76% of ingested magnesium is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, primarily via passive paracellular absorption in the small intestine. About 20% of magnesium in human serum is protein-bound, with 60–70% bound to albumin and the remainder to globulin proteins. Magnesium can bind to over 3,700 human proteins and is largely excreted via the kidneys. Magnesium does not appear to be metabolized.
