Adapalene

Generic Medicine
Indications

Adapalene cream or gel is used as a topical treatment for acne vulgaris.

Pharmacology

Adapalene works by acting on retinoid receptors that are present in the skin of the face, back, and chest. Studies have shown that it helps regulate cell differentiation, keratin formation, and inflammatory responses, which are key factors in acne development. It binds to specific retinoic acid receptors in the skin, helping normalize the growth of follicular epithelial cells and reducing the formation of microcomedones. The absorption of Adapalene through the skin is minimal.

Dosage Administration

Adapalene 0.1%: It should be applied to the affected areas of skin, once daily at night-time.

Adapalene 0.3%: It should be applied to the entire face and any other affected areas of the skin, once daily in the evening.

Children below 12 years of age: Safety and effectiveness in children below 12 years of age have not been established.

Administration

A thin film of gel or cream should be applied to the skin areas where lesions present, using enough to cover the entire affected areas lightly.

Interactions

Using Adapalene together with other topical products that may irritate the skin (such as medicated or abrasive soaps, strong cleansers, products with high alcohol content, astringents, spices, or lime) should be done carefully. Particular caution is needed with preparations containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid. If such products have been used previously, it is recommended to wait until their effects on the skin have subsided before starting Adapalene. If both treatments are necessary, they should be applied at different times.

Contraindications

Adapalene should not be used in patients who are allergic to Adapalene or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Common side effects include redness, peeling, dryness, itching, burning sensation, skin irritation, stinging, and temporary worsening of acne. These effects are usually more noticeable during the first month of treatment and tend to decrease with continued use.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Adapalene should be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Adapalene passes into breast milk, so caution is advised when using it during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not apply Adapalene on broken skin, cuts, abrasions, eczema-affected areas, or sunburned skin.

Therapeutic Class

Topical retinoid and related preparations.
