Adapalene + Benzoyl peroxide
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide gel is designed for topical use in acne management for patients aged 12 years and older. Adapalene selectively binds to retinoic acid nuclear receptors and does not interact with cytosolic receptor proteins. Studies have shown that it regulates cell differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory responses—key factors in acne formation. By normalizing follicular epithelial cell development, it reduces the formation of microcomedones. Benzoyl Peroxide acts as an oxidizing agent with antibacterial and keratolytic properties, helping to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and promote skin renewal.
Dosage Administration
Apply a thin film of Adapalene & Benzoyl peroxide gel to affected areas of the face and/or trunk once daily after washing. Use a pea-sized amount for each area of the face (e.g., forehead, chin, each cheek). Avoid the eyes, lips and mucous membranes. Adapalene & Benzoyl peroxide is not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.
Pediatric use: The safety and effectiveness of Adapalene and Benzoyl peroxide gel in pediatric patients under the age of 12 years have not been established.
Interactions
Using other topical acne treatments at the same time should be done carefully, as it may increase the risk of cumulative skin irritation, especially with products that cause peeling, exfoliation, or abrasion. No established drug interaction studies have been conducted.
Contraindications
This medication should not be used in individuals who are allergic to any of its components.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include redness, peeling, dryness, and sensations such as stinging or burning. Frequently reported reactions are dry skin, contact dermatitis, burning at the application site, irritation, and general skin discomfort.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women using Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide. Animal studies with the combination or Benzoyl Peroxide alone have not been sufficiently conducted, and animal results may not fully reflect human response. Therefore, this medication should be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether these drugs pass into human breast milk, so caution is advised when used by breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Limit exposure to sunlight and avoid sunlamps. Use sunscreen when sun exposure cannot be avoided.
Therapeutic Class
