Alcaftadine is formulated as a sterile ophthalmic solution for topical application. It acts as an antihistamine by blocking histamine receptors and preventing histamine release from mast cells. Additionally, it has activity against H2 and H4 receptors and exhibits anti-inflammatory effects. It helps relieve itching during the early phase of allergic response, while stabilization of mast cells reduces the release of inflammatory mediators involved in the later phase of allergic conjunctivitis.
Dosage Administration
Adults and children 2 years and over: Instill one drop in each eye once daily.
Contraindications
Alcaftadine should not be used in patients who are allergic to any ingredient of the formulation.
Side Effects
Common side effects include eye irritation, burning or stinging sensation during application, redness, itching, nasopharyngitis, and headache.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Alcaftadine belongs to pregnancy category B. However, there are no sufficient and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, so it should be used only when clearly necessary. It is not known whether the drug passes into breast milk; therefore, caution is advised during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or surrounding surfaces to prevent contamination. Do not wear contact lenses if the eyes are red. This medication should not be used for contact lens–related irritation and should not be applied while wearing lenses. Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert them after at least 10 minutes. If using multiple eye medications, maintain a minimum gap of 5 minutes between applications.
Special Populations
Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in children under 2 years have not been established.
Geriatric Use: No significant differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and younger patients.
