Pharmacology

Aloe vera is a succulent plant characterized by thick, fleshy, serrated, lance-shaped greenish leaves. The inner gel is obtained by cutting open the leaf. This gel is transparent, odorless, and tasteless, and it does not contain the outer leaf layer or yellow latex. It contains over 75 biologically active substances including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids, and salicylic acid.

Its wound-healing effects are explained by multiple mechanisms such as maintaining moisture at the wound site, promoting epithelial cell movement, accelerating collagen synthesis, and reducing inflammation.

Additionally, mucopolysaccharides in aloe vera help retain moisture in the skin and improve hydration. It stimulates fibroblasts, increasing collagen and elastin production, thereby enhancing skin elasticity and reducing wrinkles. Aloe vera also inhibits cyclooxygenase pathways, reducing prostaglandin E2 levels and inflammation. It may also activate immune responses by stimulating macrophages. Antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase further contribute to its protective effects on the skin.

Dosage Administration
