Betamethasone Valerate cream or ointment is indicated for the treatment of-
Betamethasone Valerate BP is a synthetic adrenocorticosteroid with glucocorticoid properties. It is an analog of prednisolone and also exhibits a mild degree of mineralocorticoid activity. Owing to its anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects, it is highly effective and well suited for dermatological applications. The drug is absorbed through the skin, and the presence of inflammation or other skin disorders can enhance its percutaneous absorption. The use of occlusive dressings significantly increases its absorption through the skin.
Apply sparingly to the affected area two or three times daily until improvement occurs, then twice daily or less. The usual maximum duration of therapy is three weeks.
There are no significant drug interactions reported with Betamethasone Cream/Ointment.
Betamethasone Valerate cream or ointment is contraindicated in the following conditions :
The following local adverse reactions are more likely to occur with high doses, prolonged use, or when Cream/Ointment is applied under occlusive dressings: dryness, itching, burning sensation, skin thinning, and local irritation. Additional possible effects include features of hypercortisolism, telangiectasia, striae, skin atrophy, hypertrichosis, changes in pigmentation, secondary infection, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, skin maceration, acneiform eruptions, and worsening of existing symptoms.
It should not be used extensively in pregnancy.
Betamethasone Cream/Ointment is generally well tolerated; however, treatment should be discontinued if signs of hypersensitivity occur. Prolonged continuous topical therapy should be avoided whenever possible, especially in children, as adrenal suppression may develop even without the use of occlusive dressings. When applied to large surface areas, sufficient systemic absorption may occur, potentially leading to symptoms of hypercortisolism. This risk increases with prolonged use or when occlusive dressings are used. Extended treatment may also cause atrophic changes, particularly on the face or other sensitive areas of the body. Care should be taken when applying the preparation to the eyelids to prevent contact with the eyes, as this may result in glaucoma. If an infection spreads during treatment, topical corticosteroid therapy should be discontinued.
