Mefenamic Acid is indicated for the relief and treatment of:

• Fever
• Toothache
• Headache
• Migraine
• Primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation)
• Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding)
• Mild to moderate pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
• Traumatic pain
• Low back pain
• Juvenile chronic arthritis in children

Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Its action is mainly due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by blocking the prostaglandin synthetase enzymes. Additionally, it also interferes with prostaglandin activity at receptor sites, contributing to its therapeutic effects.

Adult:

• 500 mg dose should be given to adults upto three times (1.5 gm total) per day with meals. The dosage may be reduced to 1 tablet (250 mg) three times daily.
• In case of menorrhagia: 500 mg three times daily with meals and from the onset of menses and continued according to the judgement of the physician.

Children:

• 6 months to 1 year: 5 ml three times/day.
• 2-4 years: 10 ml three times/day.
• 5-8 years: 10 ml four times /day.
• 9-12 years: 15 ml four times/day.

Treatment should not be continued for more than 7 days except on the advice of a physician

Aspirin: Concomitant use of Mefenamic Acid with aspirin is generally not recommended, as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.

Warfarin: Mefenamic acid may reduce platelet function and can prolong prothrombin time in patients receiving warfarin, increasing bleeding risk.

Mefenamic acid is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should not be used in patients with peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, liver impairment, or kidney dysfunction. It is also contraindicated in individuals who develop asthma, skin reactions, or bronchospasm after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.

The most common adverse effects (about 1–10%) include gastrointestinal and other systemic symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion (dyspepsia), flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and gastric ulcers. Other effects include dizziness, itching (pruritus), skin rash, and abnormal kidney function.

The safety of mefenamic acid during pregnancy and its effect on fertility has not been clearly established. It should only be used in women of reproductive age or during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the possible risk. Small amounts of the drug may pass into breast milk; therefore, breastfeeding mothers should avoid its use due to potential effects on the infant’s cardiovascular system.

Use with caution in patients with allergic conditions, especially asthma. Treatment should be stopped if diarrhea, skin rash, cholestatic jaundice, thrombocytopenia, or hemolytic anemia occurs.
