Balanced Salt Solution

Generic Medicine
Indications

Balanced Salt Solution is used as an extraocular and intraocular irrigating fluid during ophthalmic surgical procedures, particularly when eye perfusion is required for a duration of less than 60 minutes.

Composition

Each 100 ml of Balanced Salt Solution contains:

  • Calcium Chloride Dihydrate BP — 0.048 g
  • Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate BP — 0.03 g
  • Potassium Chloride BP — 0.075 g
  • Sodium Acetate Trihydrate BP — 0.39 g
  • Sodium Chloride BP — 0.64 g
  • Sodium Citrate BP — 0.17 g
Pharmacology

This sterile irrigating solution is an isotonic formulation designed for ocular tissue irrigation.

Calcium Chloride: Helps maintain calcium balance and regulates excitation thresholds of nerves and muscles, supporting normal function.

Potassium Chloride: An essential intracellular cation involved in nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, renal function, acid-base balance, and metabolic processes.

Sodium Chloride: The principal extracellular cation, crucial for maintaining fluid balance, osmotic pressure, and distribution of body water. It also provides electrolytes and supports hydration.

Magnesium Chloride: Acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions related to protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism; also exhibits CNS depressant and anticonvulsant effects.

Sodium Acetate: Serves as a precursor of bicarbonate through liver metabolism, contributing to acid-base balance.

Sodium Citrate: Helps maintain pH stability and supports buffering action.

Dosage Administration

This irrigating solution should be used according to standard format for each surgical procedure.

Note: Use an administration set with an air-inlet in the plastic spike since the bottle does not contain a separate airway tube. Follow directions of the particular administration set to be used. Remove the blue flip-off cap. Clean and disinfect the rubber stopper by using a sterile alcohol wipe. Insert the spike aseptically into the bottle through the target area of the rubber stopper. Allow the fluid to flow and remove air from the tubing before irrigation begins.

Contraindications

This solution is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Ocular irrigation or surgical manipulation may lead to corneal swelling or bullous keratopathy. Postoperative inflammatory reactions, corneal edema, and corneal decompensation have also been reported.
