Mometasone furoate is prescribed for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma as preventive therapy in patients aged 4 years and older. It is not intended for the relief of acute bronchospasm and should not be used in children under 4 years of age.
Mometasone Furoate (Inhalation Capsule)
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory effects. The exact mechanism by which corticosteroids act in asthma is not fully understood. However, they are known to influence a variety of inflammatory cells—such as mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes—as well as inflammatory mediators including histamines, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines.

Interactions
Ketoconazole, a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), may increase the plasma concentrations of mometasone furoate when administered concurrently.
Contraindications
Use of this preparation is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. Mometasone furoate therapy is also contraindicated for the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute asthma episodes requiring intensive intervention.
Side Effects
Adverse effects are generally mild and may include headache, viral infections, sore throat, epistaxis, and cough. Both systemic and local corticosteroid use may also be associated with less common effects such as candidal infections, immunosuppression, hypercorticism, adrenal suppression, growth-related effects, glaucoma, and cataracts.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. As with other corticosteroids, mometasone furoate should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Lactation: It is not known whether mometasone furoate is excreted in human breast milk. Because other corticosteroids are known to be excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when administering mometasone furoate to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Mometasone furoate should be used with caution in patients with active or latent tuberculosis, ocular herpes simplex infection, or untreated systemic infections.
Overdose Effects
No data are available regarding the effects of acute or chronic overdose with mometasone furoate. Due to its low systemic bioavailability and the lack of acute drug-related systemic effects observed in clinical studies, an overdose is unlikely to require treatment beyond appropriate monitoring and observation.
Therapeutic Class
Corticosteroid, Respiratory corticosteroids.
Storage Conditions
Protect from light and store in a cool, dry place. Do not store above 30°C. Keep out of the reach of children and protect from freezing. Insert the inhalation capsule into the inhalation device immediately before use to prevent moisture-related deterioration.
