Typhoid polysaccharide vaccine

Generic Medicine
Indications

Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine is used for active immunization against typhoid fever in adults and children aged 2 years and older.

Selective immunization is recommended for:

  • Travelers to high-risk or endemic areas
  • Household contacts of typhoid carriers
  • Healthcare personnel
  • Police, armed forces, and other regimented personnel
  • Laboratory workers handling Salmonella typhi
Description

Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine is a sterile, clear, and colorless solution intended for intramuscular administration. It contains Vi polysaccharide derived from Salmonella typhi Ty2 strain.

Dosage Administration

Dosage: A single dose of 0.5 ml is recommended for both adults and children 2 years of age or older. Subjects who remain at risk of typhoid fever should be given a single booster dose of the vaccine with an interval of not more than 3
years.

Administration: Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine is for intramuscular injection only. Do not inject intravenously. This should be given intramuscularly in the deltoid, and children should be injected intramuscularly either in the deltoid or the vastus lateralis. It should not be injected into the gluteal areas where there may be a nerve trunk. Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine injection should be administered with caution to subjects with thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorders since bleeding may occur following an intramuscular administration to these subjects. Following injection, firm pressure should be applied to the site (without rubbing) for at least two minutes.

Co-administration: Typhoid vaccine can be co-administered with other vaccines but should not be mixed with other vaccines or medicinal products in the same syringe.

Contraindications

The vaccine provides protection against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi but does not protect against paratyphoid fever or illnesses caused by non-invasive Salmonella species. It should not be administered to individuals with known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine or to those who have shown allergic reactions following previous typhoid vaccination or other vaccines containing Vi polysaccharide antigens. In individuals receiving immunosuppressive therapy or those with immunodeficiency, an adequate immune response may not be achieved. Vaccination should be postponed in patients suffering from acute severe febrile illness.

Side Effects

Most individuals receiving the typhoid vaccine may experience mild reactions, which are usually short-lived. These commonly include local reactions at the injection site such as redness, swelling, and tenderness. Systemic reactions such as malaise, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle pain, and fever may occur less frequently. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as itching, rash, or urticaria may be observed.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The effects of the Typhoid vaccine on fetal development and reproductive function have not been fully studied. It should be used during pregnancy only when there is a significant risk of infection. It is not known whether the vaccine is excreted in human breast milk. It may be given to breastfeeding mothers only if clearly necessary.

Therapeutic Class

Vaccines, Anti-sera & Immunoglobulin
