Yellow Fever Vaccine

Generic Medicine
Indications

Yellow Fever Vaccine provides protection against a serious viral infection known as yellow fever. This disease occurs in certain regions of the world and is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

Yellow Fever Vaccine is recommended for individuals who:

  • are traveling to, passing through, or living in areas where yellow fever is endemic
  • are visiting countries that require an International Certificate of Vaccination for entry (depending on travel itinerary)
  • may be exposed to infectious materials, such as laboratory personnel

To obtain a valid vaccination certificate against yellow fever, vaccination must be carried out at an approved vaccination center by a trained healthcare professional. This ensures issuance of an International Certificate of Vaccination. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after the first dose of the vaccine. In certain cases, a booster dose may be required after 10 years.

Pharmacology

The live, attenuated virus in the Yellow Fever Vaccine induces active immunity against yellow fever by stimulating the body to produce its own antibodies. It is used for active immunization against yellow fever. Each dose (usually 0.5 mL) contains not less than 1000 mouse LD₅₀ units.

Dosage Administration

Yellow Fever Vaccine is administered as a single 0.5 mL dose to both adults and children aged 6 months and above. The vaccine should be given at least 10 days before protection is required, as it takes this time to develop immunity. The protection provided by the vaccine is expected to last for at least 10 years and may be lifelong.

In certain situations, a booster dose (0.5 mL) may be recommended:

  • if the initial response to vaccination was inadequate and there is continued risk of exposure
  • or based on official health recommendations

The vaccine should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. It is usually given as a subcutaneous injection but may also be administered intramuscularly. It must not be injected into a blood vessel.

Interactions

Inform your healthcare provider if you are currently taking, have recently taken, or may take any other medications. If you have undergone treatment or taken medicines that may weaken your immune system, vaccination should be postponed until your immune system has recovered, confirmed by laboratory tests. Your doctor will advise when it is safe to receive the vaccine. The yellow fever vaccine may be administered at the same time as the measles vaccine or vaccines against typhoid fever (containing Vi capsular polysaccharide) and/or hepatitis A. Vaccination may cause false-positive results in blood tests for dengue or Japanese encephalitis. Inform your doctor if such tests are planned.

Contraindications

Do not use Yellow Fever Vaccine if you or your child:

  • are allergic to the active substance or any other component of the vaccine
  • are allergic to eggs or chicken proteins
  • have had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of yellow fever vaccine
  • are younger than 6 months of age
  • have a weakened immune system due to illness or treatments (e.g., high-dose steroids, immunosuppressants, or chemotherapy)
  • have HIV infection with significant immune suppression or active symptoms
  • have a history of thymus disorder or have had the thymus gland removed
  • have a current illness with moderate or high fever; vaccination should be delayed until recovery
Side Effects

Serious allergic reactions have occasionally been reported, including:

  • Skin rash, itching, or hives
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Difficulty in swallowing or breathing
  • Loss of consciousness
Pregnancy & Lactation

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning pregnancy, or think you may be pregnant, consult your healthcare provider before vaccination. Yellow Fever Vaccine should generally be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary. It is recommended to avoid becoming pregnant for at least one month after vaccination. If vaccination is essential, breastfeeding may need to be interrupted for at least 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine. Always seek medical advice if vaccinated during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Inform your healthcare professional if any of the following conditions apply to you or your child. If anything is unclear, seek clarification from your healthcare provider.

Before receiving Yellow Fever Vaccine, a proper risk assessment by a qualified healthcare professional is necessary to determine suitability:

  • Individuals over 60 years of age or infants younger than 9 months have a higher risk of serious adverse reactions (including effects on the brain, nerves, and vital organs). Vaccination is recommended only if the risk of infection is significant based on travel to endemic areas.
  • Infants aged 6 to 9 months should receive the vaccine only in special situations and according to official recommendations.
  • Individuals infected with HIV but without active symptoms may be vaccinated based on laboratory results and specialist advice.
  • Those with bleeding disorders (e.g., haemophilia or low platelet count) or those taking anticoagulant medications may still receive the vaccine if administered subcutaneously rather than intramuscularly.
  • Individuals with a known latex allergy should be cautious, as the tip cap of the pre-filled syringe may contain natural rubber latex that can cause allergic reactions.
