This preparation is indicated for the treatment of superficial fungal infections of the skin, such as ringworm. It also helps to promote the shedding of dead skin (desquamation).
Benzoic Acid + Salicylic Acid
Generic MedicinePharmacology
This preparation contains benzoic acid and salicylic acid in a 2:1 ratio (6%:3%), commonly known as Whitfield’s ointment. Benzoic acid provides fungistatic activity, inhibiting the growth of fungi, while salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent that softens and removes the outer layer of dead skin. Since benzoic acid does not directly kill fungi, complete eradication depends on the gradual shedding of the infected stratum corneum. Therefore, continuous treatment over several weeks or months may be necessary. Salicylic acid enhances this process by accelerating desquamation.
Dosage Administration
Adult & Children: Apply twice daily. It may be used in children in appropriate dose. It should not be used in neonates.
Interactions
Topically applied salicylic acid may be absorbed systemically and interact with several medications. It may increase the toxicity of drugs such as acetazolamide, anticoagulants, dipyridamole, heparin, hypoglycemic agents, and methotrexate. It may reduce the effectiveness of drugs like bumetanide, captopril, and probenecid. Light kaolin may adsorb benzoic acid, thereby reducing its therapeutic activity.
Contraindications
This preparation is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. Prolonged or excessive use of topical salicylic acid may lead to salicylism; therefore, it should not be applied over large areas, in high concentrations, for extended periods, or on inflamed or damaged skin.
Side Effects
Benzoic acid may cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Salicylic acid may also irritate the skin and can lead to dermatitis. Excessive use over large areas may result in systemic absorption of salicylic acid, potentially causing acute salicylate toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Salicylic acid has shown teratogenic effects in animal studies. Although such effects have not been confirmed in humans, its use during pregnancy is not recommended. Since it may be excreted in breast milk, it should be avoided during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
For external use only. Avoid contact with the mouth, eyes, and other mucous membranes to prevent irritation. Use cautiously in patients with diabetes or impaired peripheral circulation, especially on the extremities. If skin irritation develops or worsens, reduce usage or consult a physician.
Therapeutic Class
Other antifungal preparations.
Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
