Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting due to
Cyclizine Hydrochloride is a US FDA–approved antihistaminic antiemetic drug with both anticholinergic and antiemetic properties. It works by reducing the excitability of the inner ear (labyrinth) and also acts directly on the vomiting (emetic) center in the brain stem to prevent nausea and vomiting.
Motion Sickness:
Postoperative Nausea & Vomiting, Meniere's disease:
Cyclizine Hydrochloride may have additive effects when used with alcohol and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants such as hypnotics, tranquillisers, anaesthetics, antipsychotics, and barbiturates. It can enhance the sedative (sleep-inducing) effect of pethidine and may also counteract the haemodynamic benefits of opioid analgesics.
Cyclizine Hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients. It is also contraindicated in cases of acute alcohol intoxication, as its antiemetic properties may increase the toxic effects of alcohol.
Cyclizine Hydrochloride may cause itching or skin rashes, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and difficulty in breathing or wheezing.
Cyclizine Hydrochloride is considered safe in pregnancy according to TGA category “A” and US FDA category “B”. However, it is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be taken when used by breastfeeding mothers.
Cyclizine Hydrochloride should be used with caution and appropriate monitoring in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, obstructive diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, hepatic disease, hypertension, epilepsy, and severe heart failure.
Anti-emetic drugs
Cyclizine Hydrochloride should be stored below 30°C temperature. It must be protected from light and moisture. All medicines should be kept out of the reach of children.
