For the relief of occasional constipation. Also used when bowel cleansing is required, such as before and after lower bowel surgery, during delivery and post-partum period, prior to proctoscopy, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, and before radiological examination of the lower bowel.
Monobasic Sodium Phosphate + Dibasic Sodium Phosphate
Generic MedicinePharmacology
When administered rectally, it acts as a saline laxative. It causes accumulation of fluid in the lower bowel, leading to distension which stimulates peristalsis and promotes bowel movement in the rectum, sigmoid, and descending colon. This results in rapid evacuation of bowel contents.
Dosage Administration
Adults, Elderly and Children over 12 years old: 133 ml (118 ml delivered dose) not more than once daily or as directed by a physician.
Children aged 5 years to less than 12 years: 66 ml (59 ml delivered dose) once daily or as directed by a physician.
Children aged 2 years to less than 5 years: 66 ml (59 ml delivered dose) once daily or as directed by a physician.
Additional liquids by mouth are recommended. Encourage patients to drink large amounts of clear liquids to prevent dehydration.
Interactions
Caution is advised when used with calcium channel blockers, diuretics, lithium, or other drugs that may influence electrolyte balance, as disturbances such as hyperphosphataemia, hypocalcaemia, hypokalaemia, hypernatraemic dehydration, and acidosis may develop. Concomitant use with other sodium phosphate-containing preparations (including oral forms) should be avoided. Since hypernatraemia may lower lithium concentrations, concurrent administration with lithium may reduce its therapeutic efficacy.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with congestive heart failure, impaired renal function, gastrointestinal obstruction, megacolon, paralytic ileus, perforation, active inflammatory bowel disease, imperforate anus, dehydration, in children under 2 years, or in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated when used appropriately. However, adverse effects have been reported rarely, particularly in cases of misuse.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Due to lack of sufficient data, use during pregnancy should be limited to situations under medical supervision, particularly during delivery or postpartum. As sodium phosphate may be excreted into breast milk, breastfeeding should be interrupted and milk discarded for at least 24 hours after administration.
Precautions & Warnings
Use carefully in patients with renal impairment, pre-existing electrolyte disturbances, or those taking diuretics or QT-prolonging drugs.
Caution is also required in patients with ascites or colostomy.
Overdose Effects
Administration of more than 133 ml within 24 hours may be harmful. Toxic effects are usually reversible with rehydration. Severe electrolyte imbalance may require prompt medical treatment with fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Therapeutic Class
Enema & bowel cleansing solution
Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of reach of children.
