This scalp shampoo contains coal tar as the active ingredient, which is a thick oil with multiple therapeutic effects. It helps in the management of dandruff and other scalp conditions by reducing inflammation, itching, dryness, and scaling. Coal tar slows down excessive skin cell proliferation and supports the removal of dead skin cells from the scalp surface. It also has keratolytic properties that break down keratin and antiseptic action that helps prevent infections, ultimately soothing and cleansing the scalp.

Dosage Administration

This medicine is for topical application to the scalp. The hair should be rinsed and a sufficient amount of shampoo applied to produce an abundant lather. The scalp and adjacent areas should be massaged with the fingertips. The hair should then be thoroughly rinsed and the procedure repeated. Taking both of these shampoo applications into consideration, the total leave on time for the shampoo should be 3-5 minutes. This medicine should be used once or twice weekly for the treatment of scalp disorders. If symptoms persist, please consult your GP.

Contraindications

Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or have previously had a reaction to coal tar. Avoid applying it to infected, broken, or damaged skin, or to areas with pus-filled blisters. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Polytar Scalp Shampoo, and do not use it during the first trimester of pregnancy. Although side effects are rare, stop using the medicine immediately and seek medical advice if you experience signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or mouth, or difficulty breathing. Also discontinue use and consult a doctor if you notice eye irritation, unusual hair loss or thinning, eczema (itchy rash), changes in hair colour or texture, increased sensitivity to sunlight, skin irritation (such as dryness, redness, itching, or burning), or pain, rash, or swelling at the application site. Before using this medicine, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications, especially those that may increase sensitivity to sunlight, such as thiazide diuretics, certain antibiotics like tetracyclines, or tranquilizers such as phenothiazines.

Side Effects

In rare cases, this scalp shampoo may cause allergic skin reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Other uncommon side effects include eye irritation, hair loss, itchy or red skin, changes in hair colour or texture, and a burning sensation on the skin. If you are taking other medications, consult your doctor before using Polytar Scalp Shampoo, as some antibiotics and tranquilizers can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Animal studies have shown that this medicine may have harmful effects on the fetus, and there are no well-controlled studies in humans. However, in some cases, the potential benefits may justify the use of Polytar Scalp Shampoo during pregnancy despite the possible risks. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should only be considered if clearly needed and under a doctor’s supervision.

It is not suitable for children under 12 years of age and should never be applied to open, damaged, or blistered skin.
