Crotamiton

Generic Medicine
Indications

Crotamiton Lotion is used to relieve itching and skin irritation caused by conditions such as sunburn, dry eczema, itchy dermatitis, allergic rashes, hives (nettle rash), chickenpox, insect bites and stings, heat rash, and general skin itching. It is also used to help reduce itching that may occur after scabies treatment.

Pharmacology

Crotamiton Lotion is an antiparasitic medicine that helps kill the scabies mite. It also reduces itching by creating a counter-irritant effect. As the lotion evaporates from the skin, it produces a cooling sensation, which helps distract the body from the feeling of itching and provides relief.

Dosage Administration

Pruritus: Adults (including the elderly) and children: Apply to the affected area 2-3 times daily. Crotamiton lotion will provide relief from irritation for 6-10 hours after each application. Crotamiton lotion can be used in children. There are no special dosage recommendations in the elderly. Pruritus after scabies: Adults (including the elderly): After the patient has taken a warm bath, the skin should be well dried and Crotamiton lotion rubbed into the entire body surface (excluding the face and scalp) until no traces of the preparation remain visible on the surface. The application should be repeated once daily, preferably in the evening, for a total of 3-5 days. Depending on the response, special attention should be paid to sites that are particularly susceptibly to infestation by the mites (eg interdigital spaces, wrists, axillae and genitalia). Areas where there is pus formation should be covered with a dressing impregnated with Crotamiton lotion. While the treatment is in progress the patient may take a bath shortly before the next application. After completion of the treatment, a cleansing bath should be taken followed by a change of bed linen and underclothing.

Children: Application as described for adults but in children under 3 years of age Crotamiton lotion should not be applied more than once a day

Contraindications

Crotamiton 10% Lotion should not be used in cases of acute exudative dermatoses, which are skin conditions involving oozing or fluid discharge. It is also contraindicated in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to crotamiton. The lotion must not be applied in or around the eyes, as contact with the eyelids can lead to conjunctival inflammation and irritation.

Side Effects

Crotamiton 10% Lotion may occasionally cause skin irritation or contact allergy. If such reactions occur, the use of the product should be stopped immediately.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Cronix Lotion is not recommended during pregnancy due to a lack of sufficient safety data, especially during the first trimester. It is also unknown whether the active ingredient passes into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should avoid applying the lotion on or around the nipple area.

Precautions & Warnings

Crotamiton 10% Lotion can be used in children, but a doctor should be consulted before using it in children under 3 years of age. It is for external use only and should not be applied in or around the eyes, on broken skin, or on weeping (oozing) skin conditions. It should also not be used if you are allergic or sensitive to any of its ingredients. All medicines should be kept out of the reach of children. You should consult a doctor before using this lotion during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you are experiencing genital itching. If symptoms continue, medical advice should be sought.

Overdose Effects

Crotamiton 10% Lotion is intended for external use on the skin only. If it is accidentally swallowed, it may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and irritation of the mouth, throat, and stomach lining. In cases where large amounts are ingested, there is no specific antidote, so general medical measures should be taken to remove the drug from the body and reduce its absorption, along with supportive symptomatic treatment. There is also a potential risk of methaemoglobinaemia, which may require treatment with methylene blue under medical supervision.
