Desoximetasone

Generic Medicine
Indications

Desoximetasone cream is used to relieve inflammation and itching associated with skin conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment.

Pharmacology

The exact way topical steroids reduce inflammation in steroid-responsive skin conditions is not fully understood. However, corticosteroids are believed to work by stimulating the production of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, known as lipocortins. This process begins when the drug binds to glucocorticoid receptors, then moves into the cell nucleus and attaches to DNA, leading to activation or suppression of specific genes. These proteins are thought to regulate the formation of key inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by blocking the release of their shared precursor, arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is normally released from membrane phospholipids by the enzyme phospholipase A2.

Dosage Administration

Apply a thin film of Desoximetasone Cream to the affected skin areas twice daily. Rub in gently.

Contraindications

Desoximetasone cream should not be used in patients who are known to be hypersensitive to desoximetasone or to any of the ingredients in the formulation.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, increased hair growth (hypertrichosis), acne-like eruptions, loss of skin pigmentation (hypopigmentation), perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, skin softening due to moisture (maceration), skin thinning (atrophy), stretch marks (striae), and heat rash (miliaria). Adverse reactions are uncommon with topical desoximetasone but may occur more often when occlusive dressings are used.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no sufficient, well-controlled studies of desoximetasone in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefits outweigh the possible risks to the fetus. It is also unknown whether topically applied desoximetasone is absorbed systemically in amounts that could be detected in breast milk. However, caution is advised when topical corticosteroids are used by breastfeeding women.
