Bicarbonate Component [HCO₃ Hemodialysis Solution] is indicated for use in renal failure, chronic renal failure, and during hemodialysis. Bicarbonate plays an essential biochemical role in maintaining the body’s physiological pH buffering system.
Bicarbonate Component [HCO3 Hemodialysis Solution]
Generic MedicineComposition
Each 1 liter solution contains:
- Sodium Chloride: 30.5 gm
- Sodium bicarbonate: 66 gm
- Highly purified water: q.s. to 1 liter
Pharmacology
Sodium chloride is the primary extracellular cation and is vital for maintaining electrolyte balance, fluid distribution, and osmotic pressure by replenishing sodium ions. It is used as a source of electrolytes and water for hydration, management of metabolic acidosis, priming solution in hemodialysis, and treatment of hyperosmolar conditions. It also serves as a diluent for compatible drug infusions. Sodium bicarbonate increases blood and urinary pH by releasing bicarbonate ions, which neutralize excess hydrogen ions. It also helps neutralize gastric acid through the formation of carbon dioxide.
Dosage Administration
Acidic component & Bicarbonate Component should be used in the dilution ratio of-
- Acidic component: 1.00 Volume
- Bicarbonate Component: 1.83 Volume
- Purified Water: 34.00 Volume
Interactions
Sodium bicarbonate may increase the toxicity of drugs such as amphetamines, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, flecainide, quinidine, and quinine. It may reduce the effects of lithium, chlorpropamide, and salicylates by increasing their clearance. It can also influence the absorption of certain medications due to increased gastric pH. Sodium chloride may alter serum lithium levels.
Contraindications
This preparation is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Precautions & Warnings
- Bicarbonate Component should be used together with the acidic component and not used alone.
- The prepared solution must be diluted with highly purified water before use.
- Close the container tightly immediately after use.
- Do not use the solution if visible particles are present.
- Discard the solution within 96 hours after first opening.
