Indications

Dexpanthenol ointment is indicated for:

  • Prevention and treatment of diaper rash in infants.

  • Prevention and treatment of chafed, cracked, or split skin.
  • Treatment of minor skin wounds and dry skin.
Description

Pantothenic acid is essential for normal epithelial function. Dexpanthenol, a stable alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid, is used topically due to its good skin penetration and the ability to achieve high local concentrations when delivered in suitable formulations such as water-in-oil emulsions. Topical dexpanthenol acts as a moisturizer by improving hydration of the stratum corneum, reducing transepidermal water loss, and maintaining skin softness and elasticity.

Pharmacology

Dexpanthenol is an alcohol derivative of pantothenic acid, which is a component of the vitamin B complex and an essential factor for normal epithelial function. It is enzymatically converted into pantothenic acid, a key component of Coenzyme A, which acts as a cofactor in many enzymatic reactions involved in epithelial protein metabolism.

Topical use of dexpanthenol produces dermatological effects such as increased fibroblast proliferation and faster re-epithelialization during wound healing. In addition, it acts as a skin protectant and moisturizer and has shown anti-inflammatory properties.
